Of course, they could not have gotten to Wall St and Broad St without a bloodbath, because the cops had cordoned off the whole area around Wall St. east of Broadway.

Occupy Wall St. started with a bang today, with 1,000 people, mostly young occupying Liberty Plaza, just 900 feet north of Wall St and Broadway in New York City NY.

Still the marchers went from Bowling Green to Liberty Plaza. That is at Liberty St and Broadway, only 1000 feet or so north of Wall St and Broadway. I can send some pictures soon. I was there this afternoon.

More Trouble in Eastern Pennsylvania and Upstate NY

You thought that the trouble with Hurricane Irene is over? Not quite, especially in the old former industrial towns of Eastern Pennsylvania and Upstate New York. While the party goes on in NYC, NY, trouble is a brewing. There is a present and ongoing threat to millions of people, most immediately from so many towns lacking safe water and sanitation (sewage treatment and trash disposal), from the pollution going into the rivers from raw sewage, fuel oil, chemicals, debris and contaminants, and rotting food and dead animals.

In this phase of unsanitary conditions and thousands of dislocated, vulnerable people, the threat of disease and injury is great. This is the sure road to Dark Age doom, if not ended, exactly as statesman Lyndon LaRouche warned in his Sept. 7 Emergency Presidential Address.

State authorities are, with counties, to try to publicize warnings and directions to the public: boil water for drinking; add bleach (chlorinate) for other use; filter water before boiling, if cloudy, etc. But thousands of people lack the means to carry through on these kinds of measures. Many don't have electricity.

Here is an example from West Pittstown, PA. Today it was reported that a woman died as the result of an unidentified gas, related to the high waters in the Wyoming Valley, and under investigation this week by state and local authorities. She was found dead in the flooded basement of a residence in West Pittston, along with two dead cats, where oxygen levels were "too low to sustain life," according to the coroner's office. County officials are renewing their warnings about pollutants and raw sewage. The saturated ground around the house caused flooding in the basement, and the presence of a mystery gas.

We went to http://www.Cabletelevision.com to get TV when we first moved in and I was really against it, to be honest with you guys. I figured my husband would spend all his weekends in front of his set watching football or something and I’d be a TV widow but it’s actually turned into a really good thing! We both like the same kinds of movies so I would say at least twice a week after work we have a glass of wine, I make us dinner and we sit down together on the couch (with the dog, of course) and watch a movie. BronxWorks Celebrates Mrs. Louise Mitchell, 107 years

On Sunday, September 11th, Mrs. Louise Mitchell, unquestionably the oldest BronxWorks program participant, celebrates her 107th birthday. Born in Sparta, Georgia in 1904, Mrs. Mitchell has been a River Park Towers resident since the complex opened in 1974. BronxWorks has maintained a seniors’ services office there since 2006.

Mrs. Mitchell, who lived on Kelly Street in the Bronx and in Central Harlem before moving to River Park Towers, was honored by BronxWorks and the River Park Towers Tenants Association in 2009. Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. and Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson were among those who personally offered birthday greetings.

A member of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Harlem since 1962, Mrs. Mitchell continues to attend Sunday services with regularity. She is an inspiration for members of the congregation, who consider her to be a quiet leader who gets things done.

Mrs. Mitchell is also held in high regard by her neighbors at River Park Towers. She cared for many of the complex’s longstanding residents when they were children. “She is a source of great wisdom and we love her madly,” says Leon Johnson, the president of the River Park Towers Tenants Association.

“Mrs. Mitchell embodies the best in life everyday, but especially on a day when so many reflect on the terrible tragedies that took place ten years ago,” says Felicia Thomas, the BronxWorks program coordinator at River Park Towers. “We can’t forget what happened, but Mrs. Mitchell is a testimony to the power of perseverance.”

Get Big in Cisco with Ironport

Medical Writer Work in NYC?

Letter from a medical writer friend in New York City, sort of a Harlem NY or Bronx NY dudeL I was wondering if anyone has some good tips for beginner freelancers and writers applying to one medical communications company after the other? I'm an Md, holistic health coach, writer of health articles and chief editor of a newsletter for a large nonprofit dealing with mental health, but, in general, I'm facing a lot of difficulty trying to break into the world of medical writing. I realize difficulty is expected, but whenever I apply for a job, half the time I don't even know if I'm qualified or where to get the qualifications to reply, with certainty, that I can get the job done. And other times, as eventually I'd like to switch into medical writing full time, I completely lack the experience companies or employers desire, so I don't really know where to look for entry level or junior medical writers. It seems everyone wants 7 years of experience, and I just don't!

I was thinking of signing up for the conference in Jacksonville and taking a workshop or two and was wondering if that's the legit way to gain more qualifications? I'm also located in NYC, and was wondering if there are any local workshops? Right now, I'm realizing I don't know the rules for a lot of regulatory/research/drug trial writing jobs, and am wondering- do I learn them by attending workshops? On the job? Or something else? I know these are all things I can learn and pick up, I'm solid with statistics, and I've been writing for years, but I just don't know what door to knock on. And then, at times, I've been told a journalist degree is expected, but I'm still paying off medical school loans, so that's not a very realistic option at the moment. Ideally, I'd like to either do marketing or CME writing, or both, but I'm not sure where to begin or who to talk to. Queens, NY (August 15, 2011)— All female urban art collective, YOUNITY, presents GODDESShood: Our land is our jewel, an art exhibition that will feature 10 artists in conversation with the themes mother earth, the hood and sustainable farming. Opening on Saturday, September 10, from 2pm – 5pm at the Yonkers Riverfront Public Library, during the annual Yonkers Riverfest event, the project utilizes urban art as a platform for visual discourse on sustainable agriculture, food systems, food justice, and mother earth, and closes on Sunday, December 4th, 2011. Additional programming in the City of Yonkers and at Sarah Lawrence College will take place throughout fall 2011, including youth workshops and a panel discussion.

All of the artists in the exhibition, Lichiban, Swoon, Sofia Maldonado, Krista Franklin, Marthalicia, Diana McClure, Faith 47, lmnop, Lady Alezia, and Alice Mizrachi, engage with the theme mother earth or nature, and related concepts, both directly and indirectly in their individual artistic practices. In the context of this exhibition the artists were asked to utilize the idea of the hood as a metaphor for not only local neighborhoods and urban culture, but also land, nature and the natural environment at large.  And, finally, the genesis and inspiration for the exhibition stems from the curators’ discovery of La Via Campesina (The International Peasant Movement) and an intense global movement for land and agricultural rights taking place below the radar.

In the YOUNITY tradition, GODDESShood: Our land is our jewel will include painting, murals, photography, and stencils, as well as video and sculptural objects. The exhibition picks up where YOUNITY’s last exhibition FRESHER!, which addressed consumerism, environmentalism, health, and renewable energy, left off in the fall of 2009. Co-curator Diana McClure says, “With the GODDESShood: Our land is our jewel exhibition we wanted to use the YOUNITY platform as a tool for social change and disseminator of information by bringing visibility to a battle being fought by peasants, small and medium-size farmers, landless people, women farmers, indigenous people, migrants and agricultural workers from around the world.  A battle that seems to get lost in mainstream media’s disregard for the economic politics of green living.” With the success of YOUNITY’s premiere exhibit in 2007, The C R O S S O V E R, the second annual Heart and Soul show and book publication in 2008, and FRESHER! in 2009, YOUNITY has become one of the most sought after all-female collectives to date. Co-curator and YOUNITY co-founder Alice Mizrachi says, “After 3 years of annual exhibitions, wall productions, youth workshops, etc. The core YOUNITY production team decided to take a year off in 2010 to explore new ideas and individual creative pursuits.  During that time we’ve all developed and hope to use our growing cultural capital to continue to support female urban artists and address social issues as individuals and a collective.”
