The whole world is going through a change in business practices, from Harlem NY to Jakarta Indonesia. There are companies both in the United States and in the United Kingdom that are taking advantage of these new trends. One of these new trends is to hire temporary or contract personnel even for extremely skilled positions.
For example, in New York City there is a growing market for contract attorneys. So, in reality what is happening is that the attorneys that were laid off in the collapse of 2008 are now getting jobs again, but in a different world. They have no job security and no benefits. They may still be getting a fairly high salary, but not necessarily a huge one. For example, many contract attorneys are working for only $35 or $40 an hour on a six month contract. Now this practice has spread to other fields for the management in companies all over the world. Let's face it,
Interim Management is the new way of doing things. The only way to rise above the level of such interim management jobs is to get a permanent job hire. This may be easy in some cases, or could involve becoming a partner in a firm, or at least senior management in a regional market. So some guy or gal may be sent from the USA or the UK to Indonesia to be an interim manager. He or she will often get a permanent assignment, but sometimes an assignment for only one year. To be accurate, some of the temporary jobs can have benefits too. I guess that agencies and companies have to be somewhat flexible if they are making a working person become an expatriate and travel halfway around the world. On the other hand, with the contract attorney jobs in New York, most or all of these people are getting no benefits at all. They may be doing fairly menial work such as document review or coding hundreds of documents.
